The application for initial equipment
There are circumstances when you have a right to an initial equipment. If you can’t afford it, your job centre will pay for it. We will explain when this is the case and how to apply for it.
What exactly is an initial equipment? (also a claim according to SGB II)
As a Hartz 4 recipient you have the possibility to apply for an initial equipment at the Jobcenter. Initial equipment is a service you receive in addition to your Hartz 4 standard benefits. These are designed to cover one-off costs arising from special situations that cannot be covered by your monthly benefits. Of course, it is clearly defined which costs are considered for initial equipment. The following initial equipment is available:
- for apartment
- for clothing
- for pregnancy
Good to know:
You are entitled to an initial equipment as a person in need of help. Therefore, the benefits must be paid in addition to your Hartz 4 standard benefits. Financing through a loan is also inadmissible. The situation is different in the case of replacement. For example, if you want to replace an already worn item with a new one. This type of acquisition is not covered by the job center. The only option would be to apply for a loan.
What types of initial equipment are there?
|for your accommodation||you can request for furnishings and furniture you want to purchase for the first time.|
|für clothing||Kann für Kleidung beantragt werden, die durch besondere Umstände erstmalig benötigt wird. (z.B. Umstandsmode, Säuglingskleidung)|
|in Schwangerschaft||You can apply for for clothes that are needed for the first time due to special circumstances. (e. g. maternity wear, baby clothes)|
Step by step to my application:
What are the deadlines?
There is no fixed deadline for you to apply for an initial supply. As long as you are in need, you can still receive them afterwards. For example, if you move into an apartment and need money for furniture, you can still apply for it after you move in.
What processing times do I have to be prepared for?
The job centre generally has six months to process an application. Unfortunately, this period is legally fixed. If the job centre takes longer than six months to complete, an action for failure can be filed.
It is therefore important that you inform your administrator in good time that you need an initial equipment. You can also ask him for a quick response. If the job centre is aware of the circumstances, it may be prepared to accept a shorter processing time.
What do I have to enclose with an initial equipment application?
You’re in charge of proof in this case. This means the job centre needs proof that you’re entitled to the benefit. Therefore, together with your initial equipment application, you must also submit documents proving your entitlement. For example, this would be a certificate from your doctor about your pregnancy.
Do I risk not getting an initial equipment with additional income?
Even if you work in addition to your Hartz 4 benefits, you are still entitled to an initial equipment. Because what matters is that you are in need of help. If the income from your job is not enough to pay your living expenses, you are a so called “Aufstocker”. So you don’t get a full standard rate, but a percentage so that your salary is supplemented. Nevertheless, in this case you are in need of help and have a right to it. If your job centre wants to deny you this, it’s illegal.
